67Dachshund Dogs and Potty Training
Dachshund Dogs are easy to potty train as long as you follow some simple guidelines. To be effective in potty training, especially when dealing with a puppy, it is best to keep them in a carpet-free room (bathrooms are usually great for this) such as the laundry room or to purchase a dog cage called a crate. Also puppy pens can be used, but do ensure your pup cannot get out of it as they get older.
Dachshund Dogs have wolf instinct and will not poop in his ‘den’. Of course just like human babies, it takes a while for them to learn to control their bladder and as they get older they will be able to master it even better. Initially when they’re just a few weeks old, they peep it seems like every 10 minutes! I sometimes thought I should have built a floor of removable newspaper instead when I had a litter of pups!
Do know that they will instinctively want to go on where they have gone before. If using paper or wee pads (wp for short) retain one to put under the new paper or wp. You will find that even if they go outside, they will go back to the same place over and over. When going for walks, of course the famous hydrants and trees. This is also a way for your dachshund to mark their territory. You will notice that if you have a female dachshund and she is 2nd to you, she will prefer to cover the other’s pee with her own when they are finished. They will create a visual marker by scratching up the ground on occasion. This is their way of showing not only via scent, but visually that ‘hey other dogs, Rover was here!’
When paper training your dog, line the entire room or their pen with paper. Allow about two days, and remove papers making the their ‘bathroom’ space smaller. Keep doing it until you have the size you want to set aside for their bathroom. Whether it’s two wps togther or an opened full newpaper.
If taking your dachshund outside, wait until they have done their business and praise them!
With any training assign a short word so that they will learn to associate the word with the action. Such as piddle, peep or poop! Good boy/girl, Good Piddle! Pretend they just won the canine equivalent of the Academy Awards!
The best times to train: 1) as soon as you come home or the first one home 2) for puppies, right after eating for older dogs about 20 minutes after meals 3) after vigorous play or exercise.
Of course the easiest is to walk an older dog once in the morning and evening. There are many kind of pooper scoopers available. Be a good dog owner, always scoop their poop!
I disagree with those who say to limit the amount of water. Getting dehydrated can become a serious illness and it is not worth it. How would you like not having any liquid to drink during the day. Same with dachshund dogs.

I love Dachshunds because they are spunky. They are stubborn, hard headed, and very smart. We have two right now. I have had six others in the past. I would love to have a Dachshund Rescue one of these days.
